EDI or Electronic data interchange is the concept of how to transfer data that was historically communicated on paper, such as purchase orders and invoices. Technical standards for EDI were created to facilitate parties transacting such instruments without having to make special arrangements. EDI has existed at least since the early 70s and while it has some intracies, it is similar to HTTP in the face that there is a transport like AS2, AS4, SFTP, FTP(s), etc through which a payload or message is communicated through.
